@ashelounge & @jacobsfarm_tc are presenting a farm-to-table cannabis dinner in Traverse City on Thursday, September 28th with a chef who cut his teeth in California in the early days of legal weed.

The dinner is the brain child of Andrea Doyle & Sarah Tupper, co-founders of of Ashe Lounge who are teaming up with Jacob’s Farm chef Eric Daily to offer a multi-course exploration of infused dining with a 4 course Farm-to-Table meal that can be enjoyed as is or infused based on your comfort level with cannabis. There will be infused mocktails, dessert bar, live music by local artist Allie Kessel (@allie_kessel), bonfires, smores, camp fun, and community.

"We have seen so many people feel boxed out of spaces and places and groups that engage in cannabis. I’m a 43-year-old mom and the traditional festival experience doesn’t offer the attention to detail or environment that makes for the best cannabis experience. With this event we’re looking to not only engage the cannabis community, but also to find the intersection that brings in people who enjoy wine dinners and similar experiences," says Sarah

As to the dish he is most looking forward to, Eric says he has tried to include something for everybody. He loves the way the cannabis works in the seeded Dijon chimichurri but says, “I think it might be the desserts. I went a little old school with some of the desserts to bring back the classic memories of Rice Krispie treats & gummies to deliver a good, fun memory of how many of us first got into eating cannabis.”

One thing Chef Daily wants to stress is that this dinner can be enjoyed by anyone. “The whole idea is that somebody can come to this dinner and not eat or ingest any cannabis if they don’t want to. Every diner gets the choice to infuse or not with every course. We have set it up in three different ways. Guests can ingest no THC or CBD, only CBD and CBG, or all three for the full trifecta – the entourage effect you may have heard of. It’s an evening to fully enjoy yourself, whatever your level of enjoyment is!”

The Green Market Report shares an excellent in-depth exploration of Michigan’s vanishing medical marijuana industry. We can't post it all here but head over to the MCT and understand that we are in the 11th hour with time running out if we want to save Michigan's landmark medical cannabis market from becoming a 15% off coupon.

We have to agree with Ankur Rungta, CEO of C3 Industries Rungta who says the medical market in Michigan or elsewhere won’t survive until medical marijuana becomes more legitimate as medicine, not just as a recreational drug with a medical backdoor.

“For medical to really drive a comeback, there would need to be differentiation. It’s the same product, essentially, on both sides (medical and recreational) of the business. We’re just not there yet,” Rungta said. “It has to come through R&D. A product that’s something closer to medicine and more data-driven evidence to support it.”

We can make that happen on September 28th at the Capitol!

A huge issue around legal recreational & medical cannabis is the fact that card holders can be barred from gun ownership. Recently, a court found one of the laws unconstitutional, but Marijuana Moment shares that the Justice Department believes a lower court’s ruling in a marijuana and gun rights case was “incorrectly decided”:

In a one-page brief filed on Friday, the federal government notified judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit that the separate U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit recently deemed the law barring cannabis consumers from buying or possessing firearms to be unconstitutional.

42 DEGREES TAKING ON VAPE WASTE

The Traverse City Ticker's Craig Manning writes Michigan has the second biggest cannabis market in the entire country, but the growth has brought waste and negative environmental impacts that a Michigan business is trying to solve.

“The cannabis industry is naturally a very environmentally-taxing business,” says Samuel Rosinski, the CEO of 42 Degrees, a Kalkaska-based company that offers a range of services around cannabis processing, extraction, packaging, distribution, and more. “With a lot of Michigan’s industry, the cannabis flower is typically cultivated in indoor facilities so that they can maintain consistent production year-round. And then the processing, packaging, and distribution of the product is also very taxing on the environment. The Hero Project is a fledgling initiative within 42 Degrees that carries an ambitious goal of creating a comprehensive recycling system for disposable cannabis vape pens, a category that Rosinski says is currently “growing at an incredible 36 percent, year over year.” Disposable vapes, he explains, are made up of three parts: a “chassis,” typically made from a dense plastic or a metal alloy; a “cartomizer,” or the metal or glass container within the chassis that actually holds the cannabis; and a lithium battery, which powers the device. Often, these materials end up in landfills simply because there is no good way to separate and recycle them. The goal of The Hero Project is to put systems in place so that customers not only have a place to recycle their old vapes, but also an incentive to do so.

The annual @Hoxeyville Music Festival takes place August 18-20 in Wellston. In 2023 they have once again partnered with cannabis outfitter @dunegrass.co to provide cannabis sales and a cannabis lounge. My Michigan medical cannabis card expires tomorrow, and while it can feel these days that a medical cannabis card is little more than a 20% off discount, there remain concrete reasons for me to renew. Medical card holders can legally purchase & possess more cannabis, have better legal defense in the event of accident, can use their cards reciprocally in many medical only states, and you don’t have to pay the 10% tax on medical cannabis.
