Happy Birthday, Sault Ste Marie Michigan!!
Once upon a time I read on Pasty.com that Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan was founded on October 4, 1641.
Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan, and among the oldest cities in the United States, but of course the Soo was a thriving trade hub long before Europeans.
Over 2,000 years ago, the Anishinaabe began to gather here for fish and fur found along the rushing waters of the wide, roiling river linking Superior and Huron. They called the area “Bahweting,” or “The Gathering Place.”
Even if it’s not really possible to get a date for the founding of the Soo, everyone has to have a birthday, right?
Happy birthday Sault Ste Marie & thanks @northcoastprovisionssoocity for the awesome pic (they have a bunch of great ones)
